Tomorrow morning The Flâneur Husband and I will be heading off to Vienna for an overnight get-away for absolutely no particular reason at all, other than that my Mother-in-law wanted to give us a treat to celebrate our second anniversary on September 4th. She’s footing the bill, and we just have to enjoy ourselves – and send her a post card… Gotta love that!
We have booked tables for lunch and dinner, as well as a hotel room for Saturday night, but other than that there are absolutely no plans. Neither of us has been to Vienna before, so I guess the best plan is just to say that we stroll around the city and take in the place slowly and leisurely.
Obviously we HAVE to stop by the Cathedral, Stephansdom, and I’d rather like at least a short stroll around the boulevards since I once wrote a university paper on Viennese town planning in the late 19th century, but it’s all subject to change.
The weather forecast looks nice, the hotel looks nice, the restaurants look nice and I need to get a haircut today so I, too, will look nice.
Good times ahead…
Have a great time! If you get the chance do check out Prater and especially Schonnbrunn which I’m sure you both would enjoy. Either way wandering around Stephansplatz is a great enough thing to do if you haven’t got much time to spend in this magical city 🙂
My husband injured his knee yesterday, so that might put a limit on the amount of park-strolling we can do, but we will definitely go and see the Schmetterlinghaus and the Stephansdom. Anything on top of that and great food is just an added bonus. After all, we can always come back if we want to see more… YAY for living in Europe where there are so many wonderful cities within an hour’s flight away!
Oh have a great time. I’ll look forward to your post on your return. I’ve always wanted to go to Vienna. Mainly I have to say because they seem to make pretty amazing cakes. What a lovely mother-in-law!
I didn’t get around to eating any cake, partly because we had so much great food that there wasn’t really room for the heavy Austro-Hungarian cakes…
(But seriously great food… Saturday night’s dinner was mind-blowingly good!)
What a lovely gift! Vienna is a great town to visit. Though it’s been a few decades since I’ve been there. 🙂
Vienna was brilliant, though obviously 36 hours was far from enough time to spend there. We shall have to go back some day…
Shame we can’t slow down time for these types of trips!
Enjoy…I have another blogger friend in Austria right now making me want to visit someday!
Vienna is definitely worth a visit if you’re ever in the neighbourhood, so to speak.
I wish I lived in a place where an overnight in Vienna was possible. I hope you both have a wonderful time.
It’s one of the perks of living in Europe; we were considering Paris, Rome, Barcelona and London as well, and all would be feasible destinations for a short weekend break…
And here I was, happy that I’d been out to breakfast at the neighborhood dive. Ah well. Back to envy and disgruntlement.
NO!!!! Going out for a lovely local breakfast is one of those small luxuries that matter more than any number of fancy getaways, and it is definitely never to be thought of as a reason for disgruntlement. 🙂
(And if it’s any help, next weekend I’ll be taking a coach across Denmark to help my Mum with her garden. It’s not all glamorous!)
Sounds like you had a lovely break. Belated congratulations on your second anniversary.
It was absolutely wonderful, and 36 hours can really feel like a holiday when you travel with the right person. (And let’s face it, one’s husband ought to be a good travel companion, both on a mini break and on the longer journey through Life.)
