One of the pleasures of visiting the UK this year was seeing squirrels – we don’t have them in Australia. I like your comment about having the hazelnuts for the squirrels. We have an almond tree for the rosellas (Australian parrots). It didn’t start off that way, you understand, we planted it for us, but then they discovered it… In fact, we now call it a Rosella Tree if anyone asks. Rosellas are prettier than almonds, anyway.
I’d definitely gladly swap a few almonds for the sight of rosellas in my garden. After all, you can go to the shops and get almonds if you really, really need them, right?
Sometimes it’s worth growing something just for the benefits it has to the animals in the garden, I think. Next year I plan to select my annual seeds in order to attract butterflies, so we shall see how that works out.
